Designing the Hubble Space TelescopeMember: Independence MediaOrbiting 375 miles above Earth, the Hubble Space Telescope is one of the greatest technological achievements in human history providing spectacular images of many unseen parts of the universe. In 1924, astronomer Edwin Hubble first observed that the universe is made up of billions of galaxies extending beyond the Milky Way, and that these galaxies were rapidly moving away from us. In 1946, astronomer Lyman Spitzer proposed building a large telescope to orbit the Earth so it could take images of these galaxies free from the blurring effects of the Earth's atmosphere.
